Blog of Death

January 23, 2011

Of all the morbid things to write about… but I couldn’t resist… so here is the backstory and the three blasts from the past I got from the site…

So Mamma and I are scouring Google for an obscure guy from the old days of PBS Cooking shows.  We searched and searched and got on an interesting site, Chowhound, that discussed most of the old notable chefs on the network.  We eventually found our guy, Earl Peyroux.  He’s dead now as of a few years ago.  Along with Earl were mentions of Jeff Smith.  I didn’t know who he was, until I found that he was the Frugal Gourmet.  Whoa! Now there’s a blast from the past.  And so Mamma mentioned to me that he turned out to be a chi-mo, well, teenagers.  I was shocked so had to go do some digging on that.  Of course, it was true.  But as I searched, I found that he, too, is dead.  I found that on a morbidly, yet aptly, named site called Blog of Death.

So I did some poking around on the site and ran across two other interesting deaths…  Edith Shain passed away last year.  And so did Jack Horkheimer.  So who the heck are those people?

Turns out Edith was the iconic figure in The Kiss Seen Round the World.  And I had just been to San Diego about a year ago and recreated The Kiss Seen Nowhere But Here with Sealling.  I didn’t realize at the time that the monument was in homage to that amazing photo from WWII.  On Blog of Death, there is a nice little video about Edith, so you may be interested in that.  =]

And then there was another obituary on Jack Horkheimer of “Star Gazer” fame.  What’s strange about the timing of this one is that I had just TiVo’d an episode of Star Gazer the other day.  It was the first time I’d seen it in years, and I was surprised to see another host.  I thought maybe they had guest hosts now, but I was obviously wrong.  I found out that it used to be called “Star Hustler.”  Now that’s a name that could carry some weight today!  Anyway, when you click the link to the YouTube video, you’ll remember that whistling theme song right away…

So that’s that.  The Blog of Death.  I thought this site might weird me out when I first began reading, but I was very much mistaken.  It was really fascinating to learn about these people, some of whom I had had “recent” exposure to for the first itme.

Hey!  All two of you readers out there!  Let me know in the comments if you go visit the site and what you think…  I’d like to think others found that site just as fascinating.

Got Goals?

January 10, 2011

Another year comes to a close… giving rise to a new year full of promise…

I’ve had a wonderful week of “vacation” and spent a LOT of time with my brother and his wife and kids. But after getting back from Charleston, I had no desire to go out to celebrate bringing in the New Year.  Instead, I chose to sit and reflect, as I am wont to do.

I have a lot to be thankful for… not in any specific order…

1. I worked all year long with Coca-Cola. Kind of a mini-dream.
2. I purchased many wonderful things…

 – nice work and casual clothes
 – new bed, wardrobe and bookshelves from IKEA
 – new shelving from The Container Store
 – several memorable trips: Yosemite to Las Vegas, LA for NRAA, and Charleston
 – my first cruise… Allure of the Seas
 – first computer purchase since 2006: 27″ iMac
 – my Jeep is good to go for a few more years (well, if Pep Boys can get their act together)

3. I saw my son rock out on the sax in his high school concert.

4. ScheduleWise is a viable business and we are definitely on the road to success!

For the new year, I’m not sure what to expect. I think I have many goals. But probably paramount are the following five goals…

1. 100 Centers with ScheduleWise
2. Trip to Italy with Mamma
3. Get under 200 pounds
4. Master Rhapsody in Blue
5. Pay off ALL my debt

If I can achieve these five things, then I have truly accomplished something this year.  Wish me luck!

Now I am the Master…

October 5, 2010

Most people don’t know this game.  If you do recognize the game, you’ll also recognize the masterful ass-kicking that white gave to black. It’s called Trea and my Mamma loves it!  Unfortunately, she was black in this game.  But what I like most about this game was not the severe butt-whipping, but the aesthetically pleasing way in which it came about.

Anyway, this may sound like I’m gloating, but it is anything but.  Mamma has dealt many a ruthless loss to me.  But Darth Vader put it best… “When I left you, I was but the learner… Now I am the Master!”  Well, in my head anyway….

Flix from the Net

August 31, 2010

I’ve created a movie monster.  Mamma is all over the iPad now.  She was enjoying it before.  But as soon as I showed her the Netflix app, she is officially lost in technology.  =]

Sometimes, I struggle with teaching her how to use different apps.  But the Netflix app, which isn’t terribly difficult, but it’s not as easy to navigate as other apps, but because she really wants that content, she has figured it out in just a few minutes.

I must say, Netflix Instant Queue is the worth every penny.  And the fact that I can access it from any device I own… TiVo, Computers, iPad, and even my iPhone… makes it impossible for me to not subscribe to their bloody service.  =]

Sadly, though, the first movie I watched with the new account was Robin Hood Prince of Thieves.  I’m not sure why.  Despite Costner’s un-British portrayal, the movie casts one of the all-time great villains with Alan Rickman playing the Sheriff of Nottingham.  And then I got to watch some of the first season of The Greatest American Hero.  It was amazingly awful, but quenched my thirst of listening to their great theme song…

Meanwhile, Mamma is stuck in the Foreign Film section.  Tonight, she watched a Chinese flick of all things. Go figure.  =]

Achetez a Profusion

I caught sight of this little sticker on my banana this morning. I like how the phrase is also written in French. As if the French comprise a majority, even a large minority, of overweight people in this country.

Life Online vs. IRL

July 19, 2010

So I saw the Facebook Movie trailer at the theater this weekend (prior to watching Inception).  The theater was deathly silent afterward.  To me, it seemed like an indication, at least from this audience, that there was a certain discomfort with how Facebook has come to dominate our lives.  But those are our online lives, not our real lives…Or is there really a difference now?

I read a very interesting article last week that was just a quick read then, but ever so poignant after seeing this movie trailer and the reaction of the viewers…  Take two minutes and have a look (at least read the 10 reasons part of the article if it’s two long).  Top 10 Reasons to Stop Apologizing for Your Online Life

Inception

July 19, 2010

My attempts to explain the plot of Inception to my Mamma were semi-successful. She was so utterly confused during the movie. It was actually worth the extra half-hour of me trying to explain it to her in order to solidify the plot-line in my own head! What a mind-f%@$!!

I thought the visual aid was somewhat helpful but by no means does it explain it all. GO SEE THIS MOVIE!

Remember this? Not Three Musketeers. (although do you remember their old commercial “lighten up on a chocolate cloud”?). I’m talking about… the ridiculousness of…

Long Time No Post

May 19, 2010

I’ve been absent for mealy 6 months!

Taking all the pictures still. But working at Coke and keeping up with ScheduleWise has kept me über-busy.

I’m about to hit you with a ton of short posts. My feeble attempt at playing catch-up.

Mamma loves Chef Liu

May 19, 2010

There hasn’t been a Chinese restaurant that my Mamma ever liked. That is until I took her to Chef Liu.

Witness the goodness of Tianjin cuisine! And one happy Mamma.
